Barre Hellquist

Three New Waterlily Species
Three new Australian species of waterlilies that are native to Queensland have been described by Australian expert Dr. Surrey Jacobs of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Sydney and leading American botanist Dr. Barre Hellquist. The discovery of three new species has resulted from the on-going investigation into the aquatic plants of Australia, which until recently have all been poorly studied both botanically and horticulturally. Niigata Koi Disease Free
Mr Hajime Isa has given his 5th and final report on the KHV (Koi Herpes Virus) outbreak for the Niigata prefecture. Niigata is the Japanese prefecture made famous for being the birth place of koi, and has been given the all clear to lift restraints on the distribution of their koi. KHV has been eradicated totally from all their stocks. Further information click here.

Canna Bulletin
A new Bulletin has been published by the Royal Horticultural Society’s following the recent trial at their Wisley garden. The trial comprised a wide diversity of cultivars, numbering 152 in total, and included several that are commonly grown as marginal aquatic plants. The Bulletin gives details of 22 AGM (Award of Garden Merit) winning cultivars, and contains pictures and descriptions of each AGM Canna. New US Import Restrictions for Ornamental Fish
Live fish of most species may be imported into the United States without import requirements from USDA. However, eight species of fish that are susceptible to the disease Spring Viremia of Carp (SVC) have recently come under USDA oversight. These species are: Common Carp, including Koi, Cyprinus carpio; Goldfish, Carassius auratus; Grass Carp, Ctenopharyngodon idellus; Silver Carp, Hypophthalmichthys molitrix; Bighead Carp, Aristichthys nobilis; Crucian Carp, Carassius carassius; Tench, Tinca tinca, and Sheatfish, Silurus glanis. New regulations come into effect 29th September 2006. Details click here.

The consumer water gardening web-sites that are associated with PondTrader are in the process of compiling PondCentre eDirectories for International Water Gardener and the seven regional web-sites. These eDirectories will comprise suppliers of plants, fish and products for both water gardening consumers and the aquatics trade. A listing for your business with company name and address is free. New European Hardy Waterlilies
Several new hardy Nymphaea have been formally registered with the Water Gardeners International Checklist . Their details can be found here.’Pattern Ruby’ (‘Arc en Ciel’ x 'Rotkäppchen’) bred by Dieter Bechthold from Germany and several, including ‘Niki’ and ‘Thalia’, produced by Andreas Protopapas in Cyprus.

Oase Withdraw From GLEE
It has been reported that German water gardening product supplier Oase have withdrawn from the UK exhibition GLEE 2006. Annie Dyke, Petindex Sales Manager confirmed that was so, but said: "We have a fantastic show in store this year. Demand from exhibitors across the pet and aquatic’s industries has been exceptional. The reported contraction of Glee’s Water Gardening section has in fact been largely due to Oase, who took the decision to withdraw from this year’s Glee to support their home show in Germany. However, we are delighted that Oase have already indicated their intention to return to Glee in 2007 she said".

Instant Baby Shrimp
Ocean Nutrition has developed Instant Brine Shrimp, a revolutionary product that allows fish-keepers to use brine shrimp when and where they are needed. The product consists entirely of sterile new-born nauplii in a water solution. Nothing else has been added. The product is completely natural, as if the shrimps have been freshly hatched at home. At present the product is only available in North America, but will shortly be available world-wide.

Firestone Heat-weldable Membrane Released
Firestone Specialty Products has released the MultiLiner RPP Geomembrane, a flexible, heat-weldable polyester reinforced membrane. Benefits include puncture resistance, no-stress cracking or crazing after accelerated weathering, low water vapour permeance and water absorption, according to the manufacturer.
